Goose Island Beer Co.’s Bourbon County Brand Stout 2017 is an Imperial Stout that helped define American craft brewing, offered here as a 2017 vintage at 14.1% ABV that has had time to mellow and develop even greater depth. Matured in barrels that previously held bourbon, Goose Island’s stout pours as black as ink, crowned with a thin, dark head that gives way to a dense, oily, almost velvety body. On the nose, dark chocolate, roasted coffee, vanilla and charred oak intertwine, while on the palate dark malt meets the warm notes of whiskey, with hints of burnt caramel, dried fruit and liquorice that the years in bottle have softened and merged into a rich, harmonious whole. The finish is long, warm and enveloping, with a boozy echo that carries the tasting through to the last sip. Best served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass or small snifter, enjoyed on its own as an after dinner pour or alongside blue cheese, tiramisu and chocolate desserts. A rare chance to taste a piece of brewing history in its aged form.
