System of a Down can be considered a decidedly atypical group, firstly for the origins of the four members of the band: in fact they all descend from families who survived the Armenian genocide of 1915. And secondly for their music: they compose the songs thanks to the use of a large quantity of musical instruments ranging from electric mandolins to keyboards, from twelve-string guitars to instruments traditional Armenian songs.

Chop Suey is a decidedly enigmatic song. When faced with such a cryptic text it is not easy to offer a confident version of its meaning, even though it is short and many sentences are repeated. By reading the lyric several times you immediately grasp the climate of profound sadness and laceration that leads to suicide, the key word of the song; exasperation that is related to a human interlocutor in the initial verses and directly to God in the final. System of a Down, extrapolating verses from the Gospels of Luke and Mark, end the song with a heartbreaking request for help using the last words of Jesus before dying on the cross.
