Description
After having launched, together with his partner James Dean, the most famous restaurant in Hollywood: La Scala, and then opening three others, Jean Leon decided, in 1961, to realize his greatest ambition: producing great wines. He therefore began to select what could be the ideal territories to realize this dream, he thought about Italy, California, Rioja (Spain) but in the end he opted for France, undecided between Burgundy and Bordeaux. By a fortunate coincidence, his path crossed that of Maynard Amerine, professor emeritus and president of the Faculty of Viticulture at the University of Davis (California), who suggested he buy vineyards in Penedès, Spain, a region legendary for its wines since Greek and Roman times. After acquiring the best lands, Jean Leon thought about selecting the best vines. To the amazement of local producers, he rejected traditional varieties and personally traveled to France to obtain the best strains of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Chardonnay. In doing so Jean Leon became the pioneer of international grape varieties in Spain.
