Eastside’s 32 Dicembre is the first stop on an imagined journey through three cities of southern Italy, an itinerary in which the brewery draws freely on the boundless gastronomic, historical and cultural heritage of these lands and pours it into as many Imperial Stouts. The voyage begins in Naples, in celebration of the city’s pastry tradition, with a niche ingredient: pisto, the spice blend that perfumes the sweets found in every Campanian home at Christmas, from roccocò to susamielli and mustacciuoli, the latter being the direct inspiration for this beer. The result is a mighty 11% Imperial Stout in which chocolate, used without restraint, melds with the spiciness of Neapolitan pisto into a captivating, dark and enveloping blend that tastes of home, of celebration and of a warm oven. The name is a tribute to Luciano De Crescenzo and to the Naples he left us through his books and films: cultured, nostalgic, shrewd, superstitious, funny and always faithful to its traditions, an image that stands in sharp contrast to modern portraits of the city of Parthenope, too often inclined to highlight only its hardship and criminality.
