Azienda Agricola Bertolino Majara 2021 From pure Parpato grapes, from 25-year-old vines. Manual harvest, in boxes, during the second ten days of August. Vinified in steel with five-day maceration: 1/3 whole bunch, 1/3 whole berry, 1/3 red vinification on the skins, spontaneous fermentation by indigenous yeasts. Aged for eight months on fine lees. Majara is the name of the Bertolino brothers' second project. After having suffered a "majarìa d'amuri" (love at first sight) for an old vineyard, Salvatore and Gabriele decided to adopt it for the production of a new wine derived from a relic vine that the locals call "paippato or quattro rappe" (literally four bunches), a vine which from recent studies appears to derive from Carignan. The vineyard, trained as a "Marsala sapling", is located in the Rassallemi district: a clayey/sandy lowland on the north-eastern side of Marsala, an area most commonly used for the cultivation of red grape vines and the ancient Tumminìa wheat. The term Majàra (sorceress) used to indicate a woman who, drawing her strength from the knowledge of nature, through magical formulas, managed to heal from physical ailments and so-called "hexes". Her investiture took place at the works of other women, or the "magic godmothers", during the night of St. John (24 June) or on Christmas Eve.
